Why is water pressure measured in WG instead of inches?

In wg is often used as a unit of pressure (inches of water) and is not a standard engineering unit of pressure. (Let’s say that its a slang term, probably from the Navy) The standard engineering unit is inches of water (in H2O, in W or in WC for column of water). Not where most people live.
