The internal unit can be installed inside the house in the utility room or hot press, replacing the existing hot water tank. Heat pumps are quiet enough to allow this. This saves on both installation and running costs. If you also require an external unit (Air Source Heat Pumps), this is located outside not too far from the internal unit.

Typically, the best location for a heat pump condenser is a shady area, away from direct sunlight. The condenser also needs to be installed directly on the side of or behind the home, away from any shrubbery or vegetation (which could interfere with airflow.)
The outdoor heat pump component usually weighs 120 pounds or so and should always be placed in a shady location that is outside of direct sunlight. Keep it directly on the side of or behind the home, and don’t place it too close to any shrubbery or vegetation (this can easily create airflow problems)
How far should heat pump be from house?
Ideally, the distance between the outdoor unit and anything that might obstruct airflow—fences, greenery, the side of the house, etc. —should be at least 24 inches.
Should we mount the unit in the sun?
simply put the answer is put it wherever you like. But bear this in mind, especially if your unit is old or has old software. Most units have a function where the unit wont heat above a preset temperature.
Does a heat pump work better in the shade?
The shade will keep the sun off the heat pump and cause the air inside the funnel to heat, making it rise and causing it to draw more air in from the side. So it should simultaneously improve the convection and provide shade.
How much space do you need for air source heat pump?
There is not enough outside space needed for a ground source heat pump – typically three times the total floor area of the property. For an ASHP, all you need is room for the unit to be fitted to an exterior wall, with enough space around it to get a good flow of air.
