Do a quick Google search and you should be able to discern whether you have an air conditioner or a heat pump. Look through the grill on the outdoor unit. If you see a brass contraption with 3 fittings on one side (called a reversing valve), you have a heat pump. This brass object is responsible for switching the unit from heating to cooling.
